With the temp at 2 degrees when I started my car this morning I think winter has hit. Or it's at least not close to being over yet! And what a winter we've had! So much snow, cold temps and now we're frozen over in ice! While the space heater roars away under my desk and I blow on my hands to keep warm I thought I'd share some of Kurt's winter tips with you!
1. Vaseline on the car door rubber gaskets to prevent them freezing
2. Have a lock de-icer sprayer (but don't store it IN your car :)
3. Make sure to use pet-friendly (birds, etc.) and kid safe de-icer pellets (THIS is our current favorite but there are lots of good ones on the market)
4. Make sure to double check your gutters and downspouts are clear and not blocked up with ice
5. Consider running a humidifier constantly to prevent wood floors and trims from shrinking and also consider the possibility as well of adding a humidifier to your furnace to keep consistent and adequate humidity running in your home. Estimated cost as per Galmiche and Sons to install is $ 650 +/-
6. Consider purchasing Yaktrax or have your golf shoes ready
7. Wear extra layers of clothes and turn down the thermostat to help save energy bills
8. Consider installing shrink film on your really leaky windows to help insulate and eliminate drafts
9. Double check all of your door thresholds and jambs... if you see light coming through then you need to add weatherstripping or raise the adjustable door threshold to seal the bottom of the door
10. Double check the R-Value of your attic insulation and consider adding more insulation to your attic
11. Double check your door and window trims to see if cold air is leaking through at the transition to the wall... could possibly add caulk at that transition

Now we just need to hunker down and get through the rest of winter! Trying to wait patiently for spring but wishing it would hurry up and get here!
